?ALOS, born STEFANIA PEDRETTI, and XABIER IRIONDO need no introduction. She is active since 2003 with her solo project ?Alos, is a member of OVO and of the historical female band ALLUN. He was part of SIX MINUTE WAR MADNESS and actually is guitarist of AFTERHOURS, as well as sound manipulator for projects like UNCODE DUELLO, A SHORT APNEA, BUNUEL (with EUGENE ROBINSON), THE SHIPWRECK BAG SHOW, IMMAGINISTI, TODO MODO and many others.

"Coscienza di sé" is dedicated to EMMA GOLDMAN, American writer and philosopher of Russian-Lithuanian origins, also portrayed on the cover pic, with artwork by STRA. The lyrics of the five tracks refer to her words, revolutionary for having conveyed freedom of thought, anarchy and feminism from the end of the Nineteenth century to 1940, the year of her death, but unfortunately "necessary" even in our present. "We started recording the songs in 2018, when feminism was regaining life. Everything, then, has reached a sort of maturity. Many people, including many young feminists, don't even know who Emma Goldman is. That's why her figure must be absolutely valued. The concepts shouted by Goldman a hundred years ago have never been so current. We believe that in this historical moment it's even more important that musicians return to talk about politics".

The tracklist moves from "Apertura", in charge of starting the record and invoking open mindedness, to "Gelosia": "Considering the numerous cases of feminicide and domestic violence, today jealousy is a subject of great relevance". We continue with "Autoaffermazione", the same "Coscienza di sé" that gives title to the whole work and "Amore libero". "Goldman's feminist vision coincided with the aspiration to an emancipated woman, capable of fighting on the front line. In addition, her idea of anarchy was to be applied to all the aspects of human existence, both political and individual.".

Stefania Pedretti has always experimented with female issues during her career, but never so explicitly. The challenge of using her Italian language, a key-element of the collaboration with Iriondo, makes communication more vigorous. While she sings, declaims and screams, with her voice elaborated through a vocoder, while becoming flesh for the Goldman's verb and playing also synths, Xabier Iriondo focuses on the bass – his main "weapon" in this duo adventure – and on a drum machine of the early 70s. "The goal was to maintain power and ferocity using instruments not strictly related to rock music in its traditional form". The result is a modern sound, linked to avant-garde and art-punk but with a peculiar immediacy. "Coscienza di sé is our most popular record. We wanted to use electronics and some 'catchy' rhythms to make very strong and meaningful contents sound direct. We hope people can discuss about all this."

Involved in many projects, Stefania and Xabier – who recorded the EP at the Zulo Gorria Studio in Milan – have renewed a special alchemy. "There are harmony and cohesion between us", they say. "We worked with considerable intensity for short periods of time: in less than seven days, spread over a year, we have realized recordings, arrangements and mixes. We trust each other's intuitions, so our artistic partnership is very constructive".

The impact is extraordinary: Coscienza di sé explodes loudly, in the deafening silence of a de-evolutionary society. It explodes in the stereo and in the head. To quote Autoaffermazione, "True emancipation has begun!".

"Coscienza di sé" est dédié à EMMA GOLDMAN, écrivaine et philosophe américaine d'origine russo-lituanienne ayant vécu entre la fin du XIXe siècle et 1940, année de sa mort. C'est sa photo qui est à la base du visuel réalisé par Stra. Les paroles des cinq titres sont inspirées de ses écrits révolutionnaires pour l'époque. Emma Goldman parlait de liberté de pensée, d'anarchie et de féminisme. Il est malheureusement inutile de préciser que ces propos sont encore "nécessaires" aujourd'hui.

"Nous avons commencé à enregistrer l'album en 2018 alors que le féminisme revenait sur le devant de la scène. Tout a donc naturellement pris un sens. Beaucoup de gens, y compris de nombreuses jeunes féministes, ne savent même pas qui est Emma Goldman. C'est pourquoi sa figure doit absolument être mise en valeur. Les concepts défendus par Goldman n'ont jamais été aussi actuels. Il est important que des musiciens comme nous s'emparent à nouveau de thèmes politiques".

L'album s'ouvre sur "Apertura", chargé d'invoquer l'ouverture d'esprit. S'enchaine "Gelosia" qui "compte tenu des nombreux cas de féminicides et de violences domestiques, montre que la jalousie est un sujet encore trop pertinent". Suivent "Autoaffermazione" et "Coscienza di sé" d'où l'album tire son titre pour terminer sur "Amore libero". "La vision féministe de Goldman coïncide avec l'aspiration à devenir une femme émancipée, capable de se battre en première ligne. En outre, son idée de l'anarchie devrait s'appliquer à tous les aspects de l'existence humaine, tant politiques qu'individuels.".

Stefania Pedretti a toujours expérimenté les questions féminines au cours de sa carrière, mais jamais aussi explicitement. Le défi d'utiliser sa langue maternelle (l'Italien), élément clé de sa collaboration avec Xabier Iriondo, rend le phrasé plus vigoureux. Le message de Goldman prend littéralement vie lorsque ?Alos chante, déclame et hurle avec sa voix manipulée à l'aide d'un vocodeur. Xabier Iriondo se concentre sur la basse- son "arme" principale -et sur une batterie électronique datant début des années 70. "Le but était de maintenir la puissance et la férocité en utilisant des instruments qui ne sont pas strictement liés à la musique rock dans sa forme habituelle". Le résultat est un son moderne lorgnant vers l'avant-garde ou l'art-punk, mais avec une immédiateté assez inhabituelle pour le duo. "Coscienza di sé doit être notre disque le plus accessible. Nous voulions utiliser de l'électronique et des rythmes "accrocheurs" pour mieux diffuser un message fort et significatif. Nous espérons que les auditeurs seront poussés à réflechir."

Impliqués dans de nombreux projets, Stefania et Xabier- qui ont enregistré l'EP au studio Zulo Gorria à Milan -ont retrouvé l'alchimie particulière qui les lie. "Il y a de l'harmonie et de la cohésion entre nous", disent-ils. "Nous avons travaillé de façon intense pendant de très courtes périodes de temps, 7 jours étalés sur un an durant lesquels nous avons réalisé les arrangements, les enregistrements et les mixes. Nous faisons confiance à nos intuitions. Notre partenariat artistique est très constructif".

L'impact est énorme: Coscienza di sé impose un bruit dans le silence assourdissant de cette société en dés-évolution, une véritable déflagration stéréophonique. Pour citer Autoaffermazione, "La véritable émancipation a commencé !"
